Stockport Harriers to join SOGM Network!

Special Olympics Greater Manchester are thrilled to be welcoming Stockport Harriers to the our network of partners across the county!

Stockport Harriers, based at Woodbank Park Athletics Stadium, run athletics session for over 600 members with an age range between 6 and 80! Already they have had success in offering disability sport through the wheelchair racing and are now looking to develop brand new inclusive sessions, open to athletes with a learning disability.

Monir, a dedicated parent and volunteer of a Special Olympics Athlete, has been instrumental in getting these sessions up and running and has this to say:

“We will collaborate with local services within the community bringing people together, to give children and young people opportunities to be part of athletics and to be fully inclusive no matter what their gender, ethnicity, culture, religion, or whatever their ability. We will work together demonstrating equality and diversity, safeguarding keeping everyone safe and enjoying sports”

Sessions will be launching in June this year and we are super excited to get down to see the action and start welcoming so many athletes and volunteers into the Special Olympics Family!

Welcome Langdon to the SOGM family

We are happy to announce that Langdon have now joined up with SOGM.

‘’For the last 25 years, Langdon has been helping hundreds of adults and young people with learning disabilities across the UK to live independent lives through supported living, education, employment support and social activities.  Our goal is to ensure the young people we support have the same opportunities as their peers to experience the satisfaction that comes from a good day’s work and the chance to enjoy a full social life.  Without Langdon’s help, these ordinary ambitions would remain beyond their reach. Our mission is to provide the extra support our people need to lead independent and fulfilling lives.

Our members enjoy weekly football and we hold an annual football tournament between our Manchester and London services.  We also send a team to the Harrogate Disability football tournament in July.  We are excited for the next phase in Langdon’s story with a renewed and revamped activities programme and look forward to working in partnership with special Olympics to further enhance the lives of our members and the local community. ‘’

Penny Toubkin

Support sevice manager

We look forward to seeing the opportunities provided by Langdon for people with an intellectual disabilities and working with Landon to provide their members new experiences through Special Olympics Greater Manchester.

Lancashire Cricket Foundation partnership sure to be a 'Super 1'

We are delighted to announce that Lancashire Cricket Foundation have signed up as a partner organisation to the Special Olympics Greater Manchester Network!

Lancashire Cricket Foundation, based in Greater Manchester, run the Super 1’s cricket programme for young people with a disability across the county. Super 1s is a Lord’s Taverners programme designed to give cricketing opportunities, both coaching and competitive, to young disabled people (12-25 year olds) via community based sessions. The programme aims to increase levels of confidence, communication, leadership and independence for disabled young people.

Today we have been at the Super 1’s Hub Competition at Emirates Old Trafford Cricket Ground. The event sees the four hub clubs from Greater Manchester come together to compete in a friendly competition off the back of the weekly coaching sessions they receive through the Super 1’s programme. These sessions take place in 4 different location across Greater Manchester, including Oldham, Bolton, Salford, and Manchester. Please see our sports section for further details.

After an action packed day of fun and cricket, the overall winners of this Super 1’s Hub competition were Oldham! Congratulations to those in the Oldham team.

Amlyn Layton, Lancashire Cricket Foundation’s Super 1’s Disability Cricket Development Officer, had this to say about the event and the programme: ‘It’s fantastic to be able to host another Super 1’s competition at Emirates Old Trafford. It provides a tremendous cricket experience for our participants and it is an experience that we are sure that they will benefit hugely from’
